Not Just Wine: Castles and Villages in Chianti
The lush, green, beautiful land of Chianti Classico is important not just for its wines but also for its historical sites. This itinerary begins in the morning: we will pick you up at your lodgings and you will start the day tour by travelling down the historic Chiantigiana road, which links Siena with Florence. Once traveled by Romans, this ancient road is lined with medieval castles and villages. It also delineates the border between the Sienese and the Florentines, who are longstanding rivals.
On this tour you will visit the Castello di Brolio, known for its charismatic Baron Bettino Ricasoli, the “father” of the original “recipe” for Chianti wine. You will also visit the charming, medieval villages of Radda in Chianti and Greve in Chianti, the latter of which is the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first man to explore and navigate the harbor of New York.
